Leitrim football team (LOC)

This is likely a photo of the Leitrim Young Men's Society football team at the time of their Gaelic football match against Cavan in 1914.

The New York Times reported the match as part of the Fifteenth Annual Games of Local 20, International Union of Steam and Operating Engineers, held at Celtic Park (Queens) on Sunday, July 26, 1914.

The previous photo in the LOC stream, captioned "Cavan football (soccer) teams (LOC)" depicts the Cavan team photographed at the same time. In the background of the team Cavan photo is a Leitrim player in a striped LYM shirt, looking on.

Flickr member LI Phil colorized the Leitrim team photo last month:

"Leitrim football (soccer) teams" by LOC   "Leitrim-1914-Gaelic" [Colorized]   by LI Phil
Leitrim football (soccer) teams (LOC)     Leitrim-1914-gaelic - George Chilvers

Is it certain this is a soccer team and not a Gaelic football ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaelic_football ) team? There are too many players for it to be soccer.

There's probably a Kickhams club in every county in Ireland. I note that the Ballymun Kickhams club was formed in 1969 when CJ Kickhams and Ballymun Gaels merged. There is a Kickhams club in Dundrum Tipperary but I imagine that the photograph comes from the old CJ Kickhams on Dublins north side! The Glasnevin Ballymun area in those days was rural and they are a healthy bunch of young men.

Swordscookie Thought that too! ONLY nagging doubt is that most Poole photos were taken in South/South-East of the country, and that's why I was slightly veering towards a Tipperary team. On the other hand, might indeed have been the Dublin team pictured before/after a match in the South-East...

How do other people feel about looking at photographs from the distant past when you know everyone has long since passed away? For some reason old sport team pictures really bring a sense of my own mortality to the forefront of my consciousness. Life is precious and only temporary.
