"DEATH OF THE REV. DR. ROWE. A NOTABLE CAREER. A host of personal friends and Methodists throughout Australia will learn with deep regret that the Rev. Dr. George E. Rowe, superintendent minister of the Albert-street Methodist Church, died suddenly on October 27. Dr. Rowe had been attending the Methodist Synod at Nundah, and subsequently made a call on a sick parishioner. After leaving the home of this resident he complained of being very unwell, and was conveyed by a friend back to the parishioner's residence, where he died shortly afterward. The late Rev. Dr. Rowe, who was 68 years of age, was born in Scorrier, Cornwall, on August 26, 1858, to humble parents. He received his early training at one of the English Wesleyan Colleges and came out to Australia as a very young man. His first appointment was to South Australia in 1881, and after spending several years leading South Australian circuits he was transferred to Western Australia at the time that the gold rush occurred in that State. He was appointed to the Perth circuit, where he spent 13 years, and where he built a fine church and a splendid block of buildings that stand today as a monument to his organizing ability. It was while he was engaged in the Western State that he inaugurated the Sisters of the People, and during the epidemic of typhoid that spread throughout the country, he sent Sisters to every part of the State to nurse the people. He was elected the first President of the West Australian Methodist Conference in 1900. His mission work in Western Australia was very successful, and in 1905 he received an invitation to become superintendent of the Central Methodist Mission, Albert-street, Brisbane. His work in that church is well known throughout Queensland, and its progress was steadily maintained during the 20½ years that he ministered there. His love for his church was deep-rooted and true. History of the Queensland Police In 1907 The Patrol was the first motorized vessel used by the Brisbane Water Police. She was capable of 8 knots (15 km/h; 9.2 mph).[1] Constable Charles Watson and a tracker followed suspected murderer J. W. Patterson for 350 miles (560 km). They captured the fugitive but had very little food or water for the last 100 miles (160 km) of the chase.[1] A new Figure-of-8 style handcuff was introduced.[1] In 1907, Police Commissioner William Cahill and the Deputy Queensland Government Architect designed the Queensland Police Station badge based on the police cap badge of the time. Archdeacon Edward Osborn The tower of St Andrew`s Church commemorates Archbishop Edward Castell Osborn who worked in the Diocese for over 48 years. The memorial tablet was unveiled in the tower on the 24th April 1927. Archdeacon Osborn was ordained Deacon and Priest by the Archbishop of Brisbane in 1878 and served his first curacy at Warwick from 1878 to 1881. He also ministered at Roma and Gympie. He had a record of 30 years continuous service at St Andrew's Lutwyche. The proposed memorial to the late Archdeacon Osborn which is to take the form of a tower to be erected at the new church in his old parish, St Andrew's, Lutwyche was considered at a meeting of the Diocesan Council held on Thursday. The council decided to throw in its lot with the St Andrew's Memorial project, and heartily commended it to the church people of the diocese. This means that the memorial will be a diocesan one. At St. Andrew's Church of England, Lutwyche, at 7.30 pm. next Sunday, Dean Batty will unveil a tablet to be placed on the church tower, which was built by parishioners of Lutwyche and friends, at a cost oí £800, as a memorial to the late Archdeacon Osborn, who was rector of the church for over 20 years.
