[Suffragettes on way to Boston] (LOC)

August, 1913: Before the Suffragette Caravan left New York for Boston, pulled by a balky horse that the ladies had named "Asquith," (after the British prime minister, who also proved balky on the woman suffrage question) the participants (three British suffragettes and an American Salvation Army colonel -- with tambourine) released several Boston homing pigeons, whose flight home was supposed to precede their own arrival in that city. Here is a contemporary newspaper clipping about the event: www.elizabethfreeman.org/PDF/suffrage/bostonPigeons_big.pdf

Wystan: Thanks for the additional information. We will expand the record when we update. Also, it appears Elisabeth Freeman is in the front of the wagon, so we can add that information as well.
