1940s weddings were less formal than in previous and following decades, however, with most were held during the 10 am and 1 pm brunch time with a light meal and cake served to guests after the church ceremony. As with most events, 1940s wedding clothing varied from business dress to very formal attire. Often the bride, groom, and the wedding party would all wear their best suits and dresses. Some brides chose to make a dress for the occasion but chose a color and design which meant they could wear it again after the wedding. Rose pink was a very popular choice for brides and bridesmaids and white silk and satin were unavailable due to the war, lace, and tulle weren’t rationed although it was still very expensive. Top left corner has "Doug McEwan During war" There was a Douglas Harold McEwan who served in WW2. He was from Toowoomba. He was married Jessie May Wright on 20 July 1940. Comparing his army portrait to this photograph, they appear to be the same man. Myora Mission was established as a mission station in 1892 in the Colony of Queensland, at Moongalba on Stradbroke Island. It became an Aboriginal reserve and "industrial and reform school" in 1896, was used as a source of cheap labour, and eventually closed in 1943. On the 26 November 1892, Myora Mission was proclaimed a "Reserve for Mission", signed by Queen Victoria. "Assimilation through institutionalisation" began from October 1893, with the staff enforcing European cultural practices and values. The Mission was declared an "industrial and reformatory school" and a Mission Superintendent and Mission Matron were appointed by QAPA, but paid by the Queensland Government.[4] The older boys and girls were trained to be "made useful and profitable to the mission and to society", and punished if they transgressed. Horrible history. By researching the photo collections I have discovered so many historical writings involving Indigenous peoples and first settlers. I can not stress enough how deeply I am saddened by the inhumane treatment of the First Nation peoples, especially children.

Fishing is one of Bowen's biggest attractions, with numerous creek systems, coral studded islands, offshore reefs, and most importantly, abundant fish life. Bowen has many creek systems, which hold healthy numbers of Mangrove-jack, Bream, Whiting, and Barramundi (closed season Nov 1st-Feb 1st). Bowen offers a multitude of offshore fishing options, and you will only need to go a short way to access many of the inshore islands and reefs, which hold good numbers of Coral Trout, Sweetlip, and Mackerel. These islands include Lighthouse, Stone, Middle, and the magnificent Gloucester and Holbourne islands, all of which, have abundant reefs for both line and spearfishing, especially for the very tasty painted crayfish. Bowen is renowned for its Spotted and Spanish Mackerel fishing, and from June through to September, the bountiful Bowen Mackerel patches are only a short, 5km boat run from the Grays Bay Boat Ramp.
