Actually the newsprint used in THE STANDARD is from Clondalkin Mills and Irish timber. It is just as satisfactory raw material thanks to the technicians who produce it anything coming from Canada or the Scandinavian countries.

I just realised from the tags that it's not Clondalkin Paper Mills, but I would guess that the poles were there as fodder for the mill.

I worked there around 1971/72, so my memory of it would be very fuzzy. Further perusal of the tags suggests they are poles that would have been used by the electricity board as electricity cable carrying poles on the streets. Duh!

Rack & Ruin John Spooner I think that you are both right and that the caption is incorrect. My experience of both ESB and P&T pole fields was that they were of varying length and a lot more higgledy piggledy tha those neat piles! The poles had also bee soaked in preservative and were smelly!

National Library of Ireland on The Commons I have been trying to work out the geography, and cannot see the Round Tower close by (unless it's behind the trees), and what I thought was Orchard Road (where I lived), might not be it.

I think it is a Scammell Tractor - reminds me of a blue Matchbox Pickfords one I had as a child, like this -

There's a somewhat similar one in the National Transport Museum in Howth.

Probably just as part of that road was being converted into dual carriageway?

Many of these large loads traveled at night through towns and villages.I do remember in 1958 the "old Hogan Stand coming through Newbridge on its way to The Gaelic Grounds, Limerick, it had been disassembled of course.

One for the no longer standing album, according to the ESB it was demolished between 2000 and 2003. They have a link to a newspaper clipping showing one of the cooling towers being demolished.

The ESB also gives a link to a 1970s PR pamphlet about the station, which gives a lot of the technical data, if anyone is interested.

If this was taken in 1961, it was just before the 2nd development was started - so there would be only 3 boilers, as part of the first development. The 4th boiler which had a higher steam pressure was commissioned in January 1964.

Those rail tracks you can see there are the same gauge as the famed "West Clare Railway". I took a Pack of Cub Scouts there in the 1980's. We were given a tour of the station and the nearby bog to see how the work was done. The train we travelled on consisted of carriages from the West Clare and naturally we all had to sing "Are you right there Michael" for the driver. No doubt he was suitably impressed:-)
Between them, both the ESB and Bord na Móna, gave us a great day out and at least two of those boys are engineers today who remember that day vividly!
