Minor correction... the jet's arriving, not departing. You can tell from a few things such as flap settings. Plus if it were taking off it would be at a much higher altitude than what you see here. The engine smoke is a fraction of what you'd see on takeoff. I've taken pictures of 727's at La Guardia airport in NYC back in the sixties.
