The Japanese occupied Nauru for three years (26th August 1942 - 13 September 1945). Nauru is a Pacific Island which was under Australian administration. The population of Nauru was decimated by several diseases against which they had no immune defences. The Island was mined for phosphate and was a valuable source of income for Australia. Nauru is still in the process of recovering from the decimation of the Island by mining from Colonial powers as well as by the Japanese Occupied Force. (source Wikipedia)

It's photos like this that prove why I love the LOC photo stream! Type George Kimmel in the NY Times archive and you get lots of hits! Apparently, he was a petty criminal who was hit on the head & lost his memory. After regaining it, his family refused to recognize him. query.nytimes.com/search/query?frow=0&n=10&srcht=...

And then there was a whole trial about whether he was the real Kimmel or not. query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9B00E0DF1F31E233A...
