"ACCIDENT," SAYS PAVLOVA.; But Novikoff's Wife Says Slap Was Intentional -- He Has Quit Special Cable to THE NEW YORK TIMES. August 10, 1913, Sunday LONDON, Aug. 9. -- The explanation which is not forthcoming of the incident between Mme. Pavlova and Novikoff at the Palace Theatre has revived in one's memories the Pavlova-Mordkin quarrel. [ END OF FIRST PARAGRAPH ] See: query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=9506E3DC113BE6...

See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Pavlova Despite the fact that Novikoff said he would not dance with Pavlova again (in NYT article cited by maorlando), it would appear that he did come to the US the following year and dance with her. See NYT of April 7, 1914 "PAVLOWA IN NEW BALLET.; Excels in "Amarilla," with Mr. Novikoff, at the Manhattan." query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9801E7DA163AE633A...

See michaelminn.net/andros/index.php?novikoff_laurent Laurent Novikoff (1888-1956) graduated from Moscow's Bolshoi Ballet School in 1906. He danced alternatively between Diaghilev (1909 and 1919-1921) and Pavlova's company (1911-1914 and 1921-1928). Novikoff was ballet master at the Chicago Opera from 1919-1933, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York from 1941-1945. See www.nla.gov.au/apps/cdview?pi=nla.pic-an11030051-5 for another picture of him. The National Library of Australia also has lots of pictures of Pavlova.

The catalogue says "1933" but wikipedia says she played the role in 1924. Must be the stage make-up making her look much older than 34 or 25. Eileen Alice Izabella Crowe (2 March 1899 – 8 May 1978) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eileen_Crowe www.dib.ie/biography/crowe-eileen-alice-izabella-a2252

Aha! Evidently she was not Juno, but Mary Boyle in the 1924 production. See - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juno_and_the_Paycock

beachcomber australia You could be right. A review of the Abbey's "Drama at Inish" in the Belfast News-Letter on Tuesday 12 November 1935 describes Miss Eileen Crowe as unrecognisable in her make-up as a broken-hearted, elderly spinster.
