View of suburban cottage and garden

This does not look like a suburban location. I believe it is a rural location. It was not unusual for rural cottages to have picket fences. The fence to the right and left of the picket fence is a strained wire fence with corner straining posts cut from tree trunks, and the other fence posts of the wire fence are split from trunks, probably hardwood. The wire fence at right has chicken wire strung across the lower half of the fence, although this is not of itself a sign of a rural location. The fact that there are no other residences visible in the photograph does signify a rural location.

This photograph shows three men, a young boy, and a younger girl. Two of the men can be identified in the following photograph which also shows three men, a young boy and a younger girl. It was probably taken on the same day: www.flickr.com/photos/powerhouse_museum/3093483387/

The house shows two fireplaces. I suppose one for the living room,or parlor, and the other for the kitchen or perhaps a bedroom. The house has a gutter system.I see no lightning rods. It looks like the house is brick. The cover over the porch is something new to me.It seems to be of somekind of tin or canvas. The cover extends way past the end of the house? Wonderful old pictures. Thank you.

Ol'redneckbassfisherman - We call that material over the porch "Corrugated iron". It is corrugated galvanised iron. It is still a common building material in Australia. It is thin, like tin, about 2mm to 3 mm thickness. The whole of the roof of the house shown is covered in corrugated iron sheets. The sections over the porch are bent into a partially curved and partially stright section called a "bullnose". You can read a bit more about it here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corrugated_galvanised_iron See examples of it here: images.google.com.au/images?um=1&hl=en&q=corrugat... And get a good idea of bullnose corrugated iron here: images.google.com.au/images?um=1&hl=en&q=bullnose... Here is a particularly good example of a piece of bullnose roofing: images.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://www.bullnoseroo...

Looks familiar, alright. Did we have one of Donnybrook before?
  • derangedlemur said:
It's similar to this one, but not a match: catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000298612

There's a Lizzie Gillick, "fruiterer", at 29.2 Donnybrook Rd in the 1911 Census. Along with James Dunne, a boot and shoemaker, at 29.1.
