CURRUMBIN ON THE GOLD COAST Currumbin is an inspiring beachfront community where the epic Currumbin Creek waterway links to the pristine rainforest mountains of the region when heading west. Currumbin Creek and the Alley, the entrance to the ocean, offer a protected and patrolled haven for all kinds of active water sports, particularly stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking. There is good Flathead and Bream fishing off the rock wall or Taylor off the beach. Currumbin also has a gorgeous right-hand surf break which is a specialty for graceful longboard riders. The Currumbin Surf Life Saving Club is worth a stop to experience absolute beachfront dining, and of course, just meters from the beach, you'll find the famous Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. History Samuel William Grey was the first European to acquire land in the area. In 1904, Isle, Love and Co advertised the first subdivisions in Currumbin The first hotel was built by Wallace McDonald Nicoll in 1910 on Duringan Street overlooking the mouth of the Currumbin Creek. During this period tourism and industry significantly increased in the beach side and valley areas of Currumbin. Many of the houses at Currumbin date from the period of later subdivisions in the 1920s. The area also contains a number of fibro beach houses. Since then later development has occurred including some high rise backing onto the hillside at Pacific Parade. Currumbin Beach on the Gold Coast Queensland circa 1938 Currumbin Beach, 1938 Generally the area contains more natural vegetation than other areas of the coast due in part to the difficulty of building on the steep hillsides and in part to the presence of the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary - a long-standing icon and landmark at the Gold Coast. The Sanctuary comprises a substantial area of land on both sides of the highway adjacent to Flat Rock Creek. In 2013, Currumbin was named Australia's cleanest beach. At an award ceremony at Coogee Beach WA the national organization Keep Australia Beautiful crowned Currumbin with the prestigious title. Currumbin was commended in particular for its excellence in community involvement and partnerships. Source: kids.kiddle.co/Currumbin,_Queensland

The direction of the view is southeast, possibly taken from James Street. The rock with the building is Elephant Rock. The building is much larger now, and home to Vikings Surf Club. The headland in the background is Point Danger (Coolangatta).

Tugun Beach in the middle distance. Coolangatta airport (established in 1936) is just out of shot near where the beach curves back to the left.

Along the coast, Currumbin Rock on Currumbin Point on the southside of the mouth of Currumbin Creek is the start of Currumbin Beach a surf beach, which extends to Elephant Rock. Currumbin is located on the unceded land of the Yugambeh people. The name Currumbin is from the Bundjalung language (Ngaraangbal dialect), which means either high or high trees or may be a corruption of kurrohmin meaning kangaroo.
