The small rocky headland Kirra Point separates Kirra Beach to the north and Coolangatta Beach to the south, and is noted as one of the world's premier surf breaks. In the past the surf break was known for producing high quality barrels. Today sand pumping across the Tweed River mouth has filled it in and changed its character. The name of the neighbourhood comes from Kirra Hill which is 27 metres (89 ft) above sea level,[3] which first appears on an 1883 survey plan by surveyor Mr Schneider. Although believed to be an Indigenous name, the specific language and meaning is unknown. Burleigh Heads, or simply Burleigh to locals, sits like a cool comma between Surfers Paradise to the north and Coolangatta to the south. It’s a picturesque punctuation mark along the Gold Coast and most definitely somewhere to pause. The Burleigh foreshore is home to towering fragrant pine trees characteristic of the coast . The Aboriginal Dreaming Story of Burleigh Head "Jellurgal (Burleigh Head) was once a flat and unbroken stretch of sand dunes. The Creation Spirit, Jabreen, transformed it into a rocky outcrop. One day his pathway led him to the ocean beach where he took a long swim to the horizon and back. Emerging from the water, Jabreen, a giant of enormous stature, rose up to his full height and raised his arms skywards. As he did, the level ground followed his hands upwards to the level of his fingertips, thus forming the headland of Jellurgal with the rocky fingers pointing seawards." History Samuel William Grey was the first European to acquire land in the area. In 1904, Isle, Love and Co advertised the first subdivisions in Currumbin The first hotel was built by Wallace McDonald Nicoll in 1910 on Duringan Street overlooking the mouth of the Currumbin Creek. During this period tourism and industry significantly increased in the beach side and valley areas of Currumbin. Many of the houses at Currumbin date from the period of later subdivisions in the 1920s. The area also contains a number of fibro beach houses. Since then later development has occurred including some high rise backing onto the hillside at Pacific Parade. Currumbin Beach on the Gold Coast Queensland circa 1938 Currumbin Beach, 1938 Generally the area contains more natural vegetation than other areas of the coast due in part to the difficulty of building on the steep hillsides and in part to the presence of the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary - a long-standing icon and landmark at the Gold Coast. The Sanctuary comprises a substantial area of land on both sides of the highway adjacent to Flat Rock Creek. In 2013, Currumbin was named Australia's cleanest beach. At an award ceremony at Coogee Beach WA the national organization Keep Australia Beautiful crowned Currumbin with the prestigious title.
