    Those are haystacks, not corn shocks.

    Thanks for your comment. I looked at the tiff image for the picture at : memory.loc.gov/master/pnp/fsac/1a33000/1a33800/1a33822u.tif It seems to show a cornfield and stacks of corn plants, so the caption is probably accurate.

    Definitely that is a stack of maize plants. The cattle eat the dried leaves during winter. The type of agriculture practiced there in the 1940s is strikingly similar to that of Central Europe.
