If anyone hasn't done so already the pedestrian tunnel is well worth a visit. (it's free!) I was awestruck at the beauty of the escalators. Wooden treads contained in a cast aluninium housing.

That's a sinking kibble. They were commonly used when sinking mine shafts. There's a similar one hidden away in the undergrowth at Tanfield Railway.
