Originally from Caulfield Grammarians, Pie was transferred to Queensland for work in 1922 and played centre half-forward for the Brisbane club's 1923 and 1924 premierships. but returned to Melbourne to play a solitary VFL game in 1926. He was forced to miss the next match through injury and didn't return, rejoining Caulfield Grammarians as captain/coach in June that year. Pie went back to Queensland in 1927. He briefly played for Valleys before a knee injury forced his retirement. An tall player and accomplished boxer he was lightweight amateur champion of Queensland, and runner-up in the welterweight division. President of QANFL, Queensland Interstate Players, Queensland MP, founder of Pie Industries textile manufacturers. Served as president of the Queensland League from 1935 to 1938 and coached Queensland in 1936. Elected as a member for Hamilton in 1941 as an Independent Democrat candidate. Resigned on 30 June 1943 to contest the federal seat of Brisbane but was defeated and returned to the Queensland Parliament as Member for Windsor, representing the Queensland People's Party. He led the party from 1946 to 1948 and in 1950 became a member of Kedron as part of the Liberal Party (after the QPP had changed name) before resigning from Parliament in 1951.
