The Dutch call those wooden shoes "Klompen," a word which I suspect is an example of onomatopoeia.

Possibly, the word "klomp" is related to the English "clump", both meaning a heap or formless mass. The Dutch dictionary claims that the wooden shoe "klomp" is derived from the formless-mass meaning because the shoe is made from a clump of wood. It is still worn today, usually in the rural parts of the Netherlands.

Photo was taken in the harbour of Volendam (my hometown). The man and girl are dressed in the local costume. The big white boat on the right is intriguing me: it is very 'untypical' for this harbour.
