  beachcomber australia That's what struck me on the relief of the carving. Think of all the weathering by wind and rain and frost and pollution since this photo was taken 150-ish years ago...

  Although it was around eight hundred years old when the photo was taken in the 1860s the cross still looked comparatively new. Just goes to show the pollution that has occurred over the past hundred plus years. Industrial revolution and all that.

Founded on 21 December 1848 and raised to an abbey in 1851, Gethsemani is considered to be the motherhouse of all Trappist and Trappistine monasteries in the United States of America.
