According to the Independent of Nov 13, 1916, page 271 -- books.google.com/books?id=TrbPAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA271&l... Hughes did a whirlwind tour of New York City on Nov 4, 1916 as the last day of campaigning for the presidential election, including a rally in Union Square where ex-president Taft spoke with him.
