    It's truly unrecognisable. If the camera viewpoint is at the edge of the street closest to the Martin Place/George Street corner of the GPO, then most of those buildings are long gone. See my notes.

    Earliest date 1885 - Mutual Assurance Society of Victoria office, SW cnr George/Margaret Sts, built 1884-85...looks complete here...flag flying, etc... Latest date 1889 - no Mutual Life Association Office, NW cnr George/Wynyard Sts, built 1889-90... ...so Beachcomber's 1888 theory might well apply here... --------------------------------------------------------------------- Here we're looking North along George St...the block between Wynyard St and Hunter St...the West side of the street. I gather the pic was taken from somewhere near the GPO/Martin Place...the building that just makes it into frame on the left occupied the NW cnr of George/Wynyard Sts...this building was demolished to make way for the Mutual Life Association Office, which was built in 1889-90... trove.nla.gov.au/work/235945120 - this ?1870 SLNSW pic of George St shows the buildings on the left of frame...including the building on the NW cnr of George/Wynyard Sts...which then housed the Norfolk Hotel on the very corner...the rest of the building appears to have then been known as Argyle House... This ? ca. 1890 pic of the Mutual Life Association Office shows the buildings in George St 2nd and 3rd from the left... www.flickr.com/photos/powerhouse_museum/2555446816/ Later reverse view from North of Hunter St looking South www.flickr.com/photos/powerhouse_museum/2666201695/ trove.nla.gov.au/work/190134678 - this ? ca. 1931 NLA Fairfax pic was also taken from somewhere near the GPO/Martin Place looking North along George St...it includes part of the Mutual Life Association Office, on the NW corner of George and Wynyard Sts...which was purchased by the Bank of New Zealand in 1912...and later became the ANZ Bank. Of course by ? ca. 1931 there were numerous changes...but quite a few of the earlier buildings are still there...
