I am uncertain, but this looks like Dr. Alexis Carrel, Nobel Laureate for Medicine in 1912. See his bio here: nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/medicine/laureates/1912/carre... He became attached to the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, New York in 1906.

I could be wildly off-base, but that seems like it was taken on a ship.

There is an interesting series of Flickr LoC pictures of President Taft going to a big celebration in honor of Carrel, at City College in New York, for example see this one: www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/2368285067/ here is wikipedia entry about Dr. Carrel: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexis_Carrel

A search of Ellis Island Records www.ellisislandrecords.org/search/matchMore.asp?LNM=CARRE... suggests that he crossed the Atlantic frequently. So the fact that this was on a ship doesn't help with dating it.

Wow! That's fascinating, swanq! I didn't even know there was an Ellis Island Records site!

Alexis Carrel (1873-1944), French surgeon and eugenicist, won 1912 Nobel Prize in Physiology: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexis_Carrel His wife was the former Anne-Marie-Laure Gourlez de La Motte. They married in 1913; she was a widow, Mme. de la Meyrie, with one son at the time. In the summer of 1914, while she was pregnant, she was stung by a bee and miscarried as a result of her severe allergic reaction. She lived into the 1970s.
