Car striker begging (LOC)

  • Art Siegel said:
I don't know if that's the most unbiased caption.. The two striking carmen are collecting money for the strikers..one has a hat saying "I walk and do not patronize scab cars." They are in front of the Labor Temple/American International Church, which was located on the southwest corner of 14th Street and Second Avenue. ("The first Labor Temple occupied the former Fourteenth Street Presbyterian Church, located at 225 Second Avenue near Union Square, and built in 1851. photo at www.nycago.org/Organs/NYC/html/LaborTemple.html "(Labor Temple, est. 1910 as a mission to working-men of New York City by the Home Missions Committee of the Presbytery of New York; organized as the American International Church in 1915 but continued to be known as the Labor Temple; Board of National Missions (Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A.) took over its management in 1943 as a community and union center)" id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2001069971.html A 1921 article entitled "Churches and Red Propaganda" described it this way: "A typical example of the use made of the Presbyterian Church by radical and revolutionary groups is to be found in the Labor Temple at Fourteenth Street and Second Avenue in the Borough of Manhattan City of New York. In this center there has been organized a regularly constituted Presbyterian Church known as the American International Church at which certain Church services are held. It appears from investigation that the neighborhood served by this organization is made up largely of foreigners from different lands of radical and revolutionary tendencies. Those in charge, apparently feeling the necessity of reaching the unchurched, have deemed it expedient to open the Church building during the past year freely to those who wish to spread revolutionary and subversive doctrines. An examination of the advertised meetings held at this center discloses that the vast majority of the speakers have been identified with one or another of the radical or revolutionary groups." books.google.com/books?id=5SIoAAAAYAAJ&pg=RA1-PA19&am...

IMDB entry on this film: www.imdb.com/title/tt0005060/ Pretty sure that is the director, Cecil B. deMille, on her right. The whole film is on Youtube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0OhTn2SpMM

    Art Siegel Cool!

Thanks for all the links and connections! We'll add some information and look for further confirmation that it's deMille. (So far, I'm finding only photos of him from later stages of his career, and the sunglasses make it a little hard to tell, but he's certainly in a directorial stance.)

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/antonia13/] Thank you for the music ♫ ♪ ! I enjoyed that, she was a great singer with a wonderful voice. Infrogmation of New Orleans I know. Pardon my sense of humour, I know its not Jamie Farr, its just that the name is close and Jamie Farr tried to look like this so he could get out of the Korean War safely. Beware, War sucks. Peace and goodwill to all.
