The caption actually read "Uhlan Prisoners" not "German prisoners". Uhlans are a type light cavalry.

Douai is a commune in the Nord département in northern France, very near Belgium, in the path of the German invasion in 1914.

A photo of booty at the very same location in the LOC/Bain photostream. Accordingly, the caption should read "Neufmontiers." Interestingly, there's a sapling in the photo with the Turcos that has disappeared in this photo with the French soldiers. Also, there is an impressive pile of rifles in this photo (see lower left side of the frame) that wasn't there when the photo of the Turcos was taken.

Thanks TLV 1970 for catching the spelling error. We'll make the correction next time we update the record. I'm not sure, artolog, if the "F" indicates French soldiers. I wish that I knew more about their uniforms. We'll look forward to more information as it comes in.

An extremely wealthy and well-connected New York family. Edward Ringwood Hewitt (1866–1957), inventor, chemist and an early expert on fly-fishing. He published Telling on the Trout, among other books. He married Mary Ashley in 1892. www.ringwoodmanor.org/edward-ringwood-hewitt.html He was the son of Abram Hewitt, a mayor of New York but "best known for his work with the Cooper Union, which he aided Peter Cooper [his father-in-law) in founding in 1859, and for planning the financing and construction of the New York City subway, for which he is considered the "Father of the New York City Subway System"). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abram_Hewitt.
An illustrated newspaper article about the Hewitts and daughters Lucy and Candace appeared in the New York Sun and Herald in February, 1920, on the occasion of Lucy's engagement. It discusses the family's Wewappo Farm in Midvale, NJ, probably the site of this photo and the women's military training camp pictured.
