Hotel Astor (LOC)

  • Art Siegel said:
"Hotel Astor was a hotel located in the Times Square area of Manhattan, in operation from 1904 through 1967. The former site of the hotel, the block bounded by Broadway, Astor Plaza, West 44th Street, and West 45th Street, is now occupied by the high-rise 54-story office tower One Astor Plaza." The biggest news for the Astor in June, 1916 was that Republican presidential candidate Charles Evans Hughes had opened his campaign headquarters there. select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=FA0912FC3C5F1373... At the Criterion theater, at lower right, they are showing Thomas Ince's spectacle "Civilization". Ironically, since Hughes was just across the street, the Democratic Party claimed it was this film, a pacifist epic, which won Wilson the election. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilization_(film) A larger, annotated version of this photo: www.shorpy.com/Hotel-Astor?size=_original#caption
