Douglas DC-3B-202 NC17312 c/n 1922 was commandeered from TWA by the USAAF as C-84 42-57157, and delivered July 9, 1942. It was returned to TWA on December 3, 1943 where it again served as NC17312, fleet number '350'. It later flew with Wisconsin Central Airlines from October 27, 1950, with North Central Airlines as 'Land-o-Lakes - 11' from March 1, 1951, then with various other owners/operators. Reportedly its last operator was Central Cargo Inc, of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The aircraft was reported derelict at San Juan, PR. in October 1976, and scrapped by 1980. Wonderful photo. Two veterans of the American Civil War, flying together over the Gettysburg battlefield they fought upon and against each other, 73 years after the conflict ended. Our surviving veterans of the Second World War are almost at the same point in time. I noticed Mr. William H. Jackson's name is provided in the caption with the photo, but not the name of the other veteran. It would seem that has been lost somewhere in the shuffle. Does the Library of Congress have a record of the other veteran's name? Some minutia concerning the photo. These veterans are flying in the rear starboard side of the passenger cabin of a Boeing 247D airliner, belonging to Pennsylvania Central Airlines (PCA).

This is nothing short of amazing.

Poignant moment captured here. To think they experienced the American Civil War, and lived to see the Spanish-American, WWI and on the verge of WWII.
