    Possibly related to this article: POLICEWOMEN AT BEACH: These Newport Officers Wear Brass Buttons and Carry No Clubs New York Times, 16 June 1913 Seems two women were appointed to serve as policewomen at Newport Beach that summer: Jeannette Buchanan (a schoolteacher) and Minnie Smith (a settlement house worker). The article describes their uniform: "military blouses of blue, but brass buttons, blue skirts to match, and straw hats." "One promenaded the beach with a parasol," the article continues, which might well be this one (note parasol folded at her side).

    Thanks pennylrichardsca and wystan for the information. I looked into Mr. McCormick and I believe it is Cyrus McCormick Jr.'s son, Cyrus McCormick III. In other photos of McCormick Jr. from this era, he already has a white mustache. The Wisconsin Historical Society has the McCormick collection which includes some nice photos of the various family members.

    Could this group of well-dressed people be from the Congested Districts Board as Niall McAuley suggests? I was wondering that myself, but am unsure about the involvement of women... It would be a fantastic capture of CDB people in action. But they may just be tourists.
