I see from wikipedia that Duffy's did "the splits" in 1956; before or after these photos? - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Duffy%27s_Circus

This must be before John Duffy died. His name is writ large in front of the Big Top. From wiki above "... Following John Duffy's death in 1956, the circus split between his son James and his uncle. ..."

Coincidentally the circus has come to our village here in Spain and we're bringing the kids tomorrow evening. Nothing like Duffy's, which I went to once in Bandon many moons ago. Still though, it's got a big top and anything is good in these strange times to give my kids some cheerful childhood memories.

Probably Madison Square Garden as in the previous pic.

captainslack: Thanks for the tip! It certainly does appear to be Madison Square Garden as identified in this photo. We'll add the information to the description for this image and reload it to Flickr.

It's definitely a lot smaller than the model of the big tent that they have set up at the circus museum down in FL. I would agree with captinslack that it's almost certainly in a building.

The 'Educated horse act' was performed in London circuses as early as the mid-18th century and is still performed at circuses today.
