I don't have a garden to produce vegetables for canning, but I do can chicken stock or beef stock. Home canning is not as widespread as it used to be, but it's still common enough that my local large drugstore carries canning supplies.

My mom and dad used to stay up very late at night canning food from our garden. This was after a full days work. They used an old pressure cooker to seal the jars. The results were delicious.

This looks like a normal stack of preserves from my Georgia Grand parents basement shelves in the 1950's (but they had more Peaches and watermelon)
