James Williams Beatty Born 25th May 1896 Crantock, Cornwall, the third of four children born to Thomas Ramsey Beatty [b.1859 Cornwall d.1948 Cornwall] a School Master, and Philippa Beatty nee Williams [b.1862 Feock, Cornwall]. The 1901 census records him living at 36 Lemon Street, Kenwyn, Truro, with his mother and siblings Phyllis [b.1893 Feock], Thomas [b.1895 Swanscombe, Kent] and Sylvia [b.1897 St Columb, Cornwall]. Also living with the family are a maternal aunt and a domestic servant. His father is not recorded as being at home but is noted as being “in London”. The 1911 census records him now living at 9 The Parade, Truro with his mother, siblings, maternal aunt and a domestic servant. Also living with the family is his cousin. His father is again absent from the family home. A search of the census finds him employed as a school master at HMS Worcester [The Incorporated Thames Nautical College] Greenhithe, Kent. The Navy List records that he served in or the following; 1913 Midshipman [Probationary]. 1914 Midshipman [Probationary] HMS Teutonic. 1915 Midshipman [Probationary] HMS Teutonic. 1916 Midshipman HMS Moldavia 1917 Midshipman [Acting Sub Lieut.] HMS Moldavia 1919 Sub Lieut. HMS Danae [the following are from the Seniority list and do not record the ship which aboard] 1926 Lieut. 1928 Lieut. Commander. 1939 Lieu.t Commander. Died 23rd May 1940 at Basra, Iraq, leaving an estate of £4710 13s 9d to his father. I do not think that he was still a serving naval officer at the time of his death as he is not recorded in the CWGC database.
