The pay-off for the landlord of Dundrum was a private waiting-room at Dundrum Station and a warning bell in Dundrum House when the train left Gouldscross travelling south or Limerick Junction when travelling north." This station opened in 1848 - Cornwallis Maude, 3rd Viscount Hawarden was the local Lord at the time. His son was also Cornwallis Maude and was the 4th Viscount Hawarden from 1856, the 4th Baron de Montalt of Hawarden and the 6th baronet Maude. He was created 1st Earl de Montalt of Dundrum in 1886. On his death in 1905 the titles became extinct, so this was not the waiting room of a Lord when O'Dea took the picture, more of a historical note. Edit: I tell a lie - the Earldom became extinct (as his son died in 1881 in the first Boer war) but his cousin Robert Henry Maude inherited his other titles. The house and estate were bought by the Land Commission. The 6th Viscount (also Robert) was killed in action in 1914. The title is now held by Robert Connan Wyndham Leslie Maude, 9th Viscount Hawarden. The station closed in 1976.

The Earl's wife (per wikipedia) was a noted photographer: Lady Clementina Hawarden (1822-1865) was a respected photographer of her time; and some of her early work took place on the family estate at Dundrum and is now part of the collections of the Victoria and Albert museum in London. A Google image search finds many of her photos.

Niall McAuley The earlier title was "reverted" so there was a Baronet Maude in 1961. However, Dundrum House had long been an Industrial School by that point (and is now a hotel) so it still wasn't a Lord's waiting room in 1961.

Super picture. For once, this service dress looks 'used' - creases on a pocket and on the sleeve; bulging right pocket (who knows what!). His tie looks a bit rough, too. Either his batman has let him down, or he has just come inside for a photograph, after a morning's hack. Nice picture. Interesting story.

Later Sir Charles Wilfrid Bennett, Baronet Kirklington, (15 Mar 1898 - 25 Apr 1952), son of Sir Albert James Bennett, 1st Bt., MP (1872-1945) and Caroline Carleton Backus. 'Wilfrid' Bennett married Agnes Marion Somervell, daughter of James Somervell, on 3 June 1927. They had two children: A daughter Anne Bennett b. 7 Oct 1928; and a son, Ronald Wilfrid Murdoch Bennett, later 3rd Bt, b. 25 Mar 1930. He received the Territorial Decoration for his Territorial service. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry. After the First World War he was admitted to Inner Temple in 1924 and was entitled to practice as a Barrister-at-Law. He fought in the Second World War, where he was mentioned in despatches. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baronet Bennett, of Kirklington, Nottingham on 14 December 1945. He held the office of Metropolitan Police Court Magistrate between 1946 and 1952.//

Via John Spooner's comment on the above photo ... "The "Prince of Wales" photo: it looks like the future Gerorge[sic] V, who became Prince of Wales in 1901. However, as Duke of York, he and the Duchess stayed at Kilkenny Castle from 19th to 24th April 1899 (Belfast News-letter)."

Interestingly, the National Archives has an entry for a photo described as: "Photograph 11½ x 9½ group of fifteen figures including the Duke and Duchess of York (in centre) on the occasion of the Royal visit to Kilkenny Castle, six ladies and one gentleman seated, eight gentlemen standing, the Duke standing behind the Duchess seated, portraits in background." However, it also says "Copyright owner and author of work: August Nielsen, Rose Inn Street, Kilkenny. Form completed 5 May 1899.".
