Kid Williams (1893-1963) was born John Gutenko in Copenhagen, Denmark. His family immigrated to the United States in 1904, settling in Baltimore, Maryland. He began his professional career there in 1910, at the age of 16, with a fifth-round KO of Shep Farren. In 1914, he took the Bantamweight World Championship title from boxer Johnny Coulon, knocking him out in the third round of a scheduled twenty-round bout held at Vernon, California. He lost the title to Pete Herman in 1917. Williams' boxing career continued until 1929, finally totalling more than 200 bouts, of which he won 156.
