Date 1912 (street lamp style) - 1923 (Bank moved). But Kerry & Co. closed in 1917, so 1912-1917

From the GPO corner looking north up George Street. The three storey building on the left is the Bank of New South Wales (on the corner of Wynyard St), and shows clearly here www.flickr.com/photos/powerhouse_museum/2667027158/ and here www.flickr.com/photos/powerhouse_museum/2667026340/ . That strange looking contraption looks to be erecting the ‘T’ pylons for the electric tram, which opened in December 1899. So this photo could be October / November 1899 ?

On the very right of frame we see the Equitable Building...built 1892-94, official opening January 1895...see link below... If you zoom in you can see the Howard Smith Line signage in the ground floor of the Mutual Life Office, NW cnr George and Wynyard Sts...Howard Smith appear to have moved here in early 1897... trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/227528554 H. Hely & Co, stationers, 281 George St...their signage is on the side of the Mutual Assurance Society of Victoria office, SW cnr George/Margaret Sts...H. Hely & Co became insolvent in ?early 1898...various digitised newspaper hits indicate that they moved out by May 1898...I dare say their signage could have remained up for some time afterwards... We don't see the Bank of Australasia (NE cnr George St/Martin Place)...it was built in 1901-04...instead we just get to see the corrugated iron fence which was on the George St side of the future Bank of Australasia site for several years in the later 1890s... My hunch is that the tramway pylons in this part of town might have been erected in mid/later 1898... trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/113249012 - the Evening News, 25th August, 1898...item on an accident near the intersection of George/Market Sts, in which a cab collided with one of the tramway pylons... trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/113260898 - the Evening News, 1st August, 1899...item indicates that the wiring of the George St tramway had been in progress for a couple of weeks... This pic of the Equitable Building was taken some time between ?1899-1901...it shows the corrugated iron fence along the George St side of the future Bank of Australasia site...which we just get to see in this NSW State Archives pic... www.flickr.com/photos/193158484@N02/52222303703/in/datepo... This much later reverse view of George St shows the Mutual Assurance Society of Victoria office...the building on which H.
