what a character!

The date on the stamp in the upper left corner appears to say 12/23/13, but that makes no sense as Roosevelt was on an expedition in South America at that time. The date in the margin (also in the stamp at the upper right) says 6/3/12 #2, and that makes a lot more sense. Roosevelt was still actively campaigning for president then.

A Vicksburg map from 1890 indicates there were two cotton compresses operating in Vicksburg, the upper one in the city block bounded by Mulberry, Depot, Pearl, and South Madison Street which was close to a Vicksburg and Meridian rail road terminal were the Mississippi Hardware is located today. A picture post card in the Mississippi Archives Cooper Postcard collection, indicates this set of buildings was the lower compress and that there were additional buildings, including one for sampling cotton.
