John Emery Harriman of Brookline, Massachusetts held a U.S. Patent for a "Flying Machine," but the patent drawings do not much resemble the aircraft in this picture. Patent number: 972448 Filing date: Feb 8, 1904 Issue date: Oct 11, 1910 However, the issue date on the patent is the same specified on this illustration, so it is clear that Harriman thought this aircraft was a variation on his invention. Harriman also held a number of other patents, for example a flatiron, a pipe-coupling device, and a rotary engine.

Guy Gibson's aircraft "G" George. It survived the war but was scrapped without thought or ceremony in 1947/8.

John This is an important photo. Gibson was 617 squadron cmmdr, right? I love how we can see the mechanism that rotated the bomb on this Lancaster.
