It is possible the wharf on the LHS is at Pyrmont Sydney Harbour. The building in the background is the old Navy stores at 12 / 14 Pyrmont where there was a huge railway shunting area.

Ron McIntosh Thank you for pointing that out Rons Finds! It looks like you're right, that building is still there and right near us, here at the Australian National Maritime Museum. Also saw this photo from Flickr user Kookaburra2011, which is a clearer view of the building along with a little history. The full source of the photo: Graeme Andrews, RAN 1955-1968, RANR 1980, it appears on the Naval Historical Society of Australia's two disc set 'Warships of the Past and Present,' compiled by Graeme, an Honourary Life Member of the Society.

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/51979177@N02] Andy Brill we estimated c 1930 based on the other SS ORUNGAL pics taken by Hood. We're not quite sure but perhaps Hood was travelling on the ORUNGAL between Sydney and Brisbane and that may explain all the other photographs? Interestingly, the vessel was plagued with engine problems for its entire career. On 30 November 1929 while en route from from Brisbane to Sydney ORUNGAL broke down completed and was towed by MUNGANA to Sydney for repairs. I've created a set so that they are easier to view www.flickr.com/photos/anmm_thecommons/sets/72157634468247...
