Lieutenant J R Alexander

    Searching the WO338 list the Royal Field Artillery had only one officer named J R Alexander - although it does not specify what the initials stood for . His regimental number was 33554. A look through the CWGC list does not turn up any officers of that name who were killed. A trawl through the Medals Cards searching for "J R", "Jack R", "James R" and "John R" plus other variations of such, returns lots of results but all or Gunners and Drivers, none for officers.

    Captain George Mackenzie Alexander's Attestation Paper of 20th September 1914 is on the Ancestry website. It shows he was born in Toronto on 1st May 1886. He was a bachelor and his next-of-kin was JM Alexander. At that time he worked in Wholesale Dry Goods but he had previously been in the 9th 48th Highlanders (3 yrs QDR). It shows he was 6ft 1" with brown hair and brown eyes. A Presbyterian. The 1891 census return shows him to be the son of James M (49) and Agnes M Alexander (36), both born in Scotland.
