The Hon. Herbrand Charles Alexander (1888 - 1965)

"Lt.-Col. Hon. Herbrand Charles Alexander DSO (28 November 1888 – 6 May 1965), who fought with the 5th Lancers during the First World War and was mentioned in despatches three times, and in the Second World War as a Lieutenant Colonel of the Pioneer Corps. He married, firstly, Millicent Meredyth, only daughter of Sir Henry Meredyth, 5th Baronet, in 1919 (divorced 1927), and had issue: (i) Denis Alexander, 6th Earl of Caledon. He married, secondly, the Hon. Ada Kate Bellew (who died in 1994), daughter of the late Hon. Richard Eustace Bellew and granddaughter of Edward Bellew, 2nd Baron Bellew, in 1937."

This would make him the older brother of Harold Alexander, the well-known commander of the 8th Army in the Second World War, afterwards Field Marshal the Right Honourable the Earl Alexander of Tunis: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harold_Alexander,_1st_Earl_Alexande...

His mother was Lady Elizabeth Graham-Toler, daughter of Hector Graham-Toler, 3rd Earl of Norbury.

Google searches reveal an interest in horses and polo not unusual for a cavalry officer.

His cap badge appears to be that of the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards

Second Lieutenant J C Alexander was given precedence in rank from 1st June 1916 wef 28th August 1917 (published in the London Gazette of 28th August 1917). He completed his military service in the rank of Captain in the Coldstream Guards. Born on 15th July 1897, he will not have been permitted to go on active service until mid-July 1916. He was educated at Eton. His mother was Lady Emily Harriet Catherine Boyle, eldest daughter of the 9th Earl of Cork, briefly Liberal MP for Frome in Somerset, 1854-56, and later Speaker of the House of Lords and Master of the House.

James Cedric Alexander was the youngest of four children. His older brother, Ulick, was commissioned into the Coldstream in 1909, also survived the 14-18 war, was mentioned in despatches and awarded an OBE in 1919. He then pursued a distinguished career as a diplomat and Royal equerry in Africa, culminating in a Knighthood.

It would appear that James Cedric Alexander did not marry.
