Charles Sumner School – Then & Now (100+ years later)

After it closed in 1978, Sumner School was in disrepair and was saved from demolition through an organized community effort. Through the concerted efforts of Richard L. Hurlbut and others, a meticulous $5 million renovation was undertaken from 1984 to 1986. [1] [2]

An addition was added to the rear (as shown in more recent photograph) which is almost indistinguishable from the original building. Some details of the original retaining wall appear to remain in place, albeit the landscaping and streetscape have changed significantly.

Wikipedia entry on this building: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Department_of_Agriculture_Admi... "It was the first large Beaux-Arts style building in Washington and set the prototype for the later buildings of the Federal Triangle. ... The L-shaped wings were completed between 1904 and 1908, but the central block was not finished until 1930. "
