Josephine Diebitsch Peary (1863-1955), the wife of Admiral Robert E. Peary (1856-1920), the Arctic explorer, accompanied her husband on some of his adventures in the north of Greenland, and wrote about her journeys in several books (My Arctic Journal, The Snow Baby). In 1901, she gave birth to her daughter Marie within a few degrees of the North Pole. www.bowdoin.edu/arctic-museum/biographies/jpeary.shtml She's buried with the admiral at Arlington Cemetery. www.arlingtoncemetery.net/josephin.htm

See www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/3238481081/ for a photo of the whole family. www.mainememory.net/bin/Detail?ln=28775 is a less stern picture from 1913. www.mainememory.net/bin/Detail?ln=7812 is an earlier photo of the couple.

"Robert Edwin Peary (May 6, 1856 – February 20, 1920) was an American explorer who claimed to have been the first person, on April 6, 1909, to reach the geographic North Pole." From en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Peary Herbert Lawrence Bridgman was an organizer of the expedition and Secretary of the Peary Arctic Club. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbert_Lawrence_Bridgman and NYT article of September 17, 1909 query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9802EED91F31E733A...
