It says Gen. J. Carranza. "J" reffers to Jesús Carranza brother of the First Chief of the Constitutionalist Army Venustiano Carranza who is depicted in this photo (white bearded [Americans nicknamed him "Whiskers"] man, wearing eye-glasses and gray hay, hands around knee) taken most likely on his trip to Sonora, during September 1913, Venustiano Carranza as México's President, was overthrown and murdered in 1920 near a town of Puebla State called Tlaxcalaltongo. In The Sun, issue September 1rst. 1913 (The Library of Congress, Cronicling America), page 4, 1rst collumn, subtitle Attack on Torreón Planned, second paragraph it says: "Gen. Carranza has gone to Sonora vía Parral to secure ammunition" chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83030272/1913-09-01/ed-... Is it possible this picture reffers to that Sonora trip? He started at Piedras Negras, Coahuila (border to Eagle Pass, Tex.), most of the journey (about 1850 miles) was made on horseback, and arrived to Hermosillo (capital of Sonora State) on September 24, 1913.
