Carmody's Established 1804 on the right with its wonderful iron balcony seems to have gone - boo hoo! Terrific photo - I keep thinking that my grandparents, who were born around 1890 and lived locally, would have known Ennis looking just like this.

It was called Church Street at the time of the OSI survey in 1894 and at Census time in 1901. The Considines

That was a Leyland Atlantean demonstrator vehicle, fitted with a Metro-Cammell-Weymann (MCW) body. It went on to serve with four different operators including Lough Swilly. Sadly, although preserved at one stage, it was later scrapped. I'd suggest that the picture was in fact taken outside CIE HQ on O'Connell Street, and the gentlemen shown were almost certainly top brass of the company at that time, evaluating the vehicle. But it was another 7 years before the large batch of what eventually became 640 Atlanteans started to arrive into Dublin and elsewhere in Ireland.

Such an extraordinary image. What an impact it must have had upon the people of Dublin to have seen that.

And yet it looks as if people are going about their business, cyling to work, etc.

One of the interesting things about this shot is that you can just make out the fallen flagpole from which the "Irish Republic" flag flew - it's on the near top corner of the GPO. (At least, that's what I read somewhere years ago!)
