  Given it has been almost 100 years since this photo was taken, another Flickr Commons collection - that of the State Archives of North Carolina, also features a photo seemingly taken from/near the very same viewpoint in 1919 (attributed to the Joseph K. Richardson collection)! See:

Tearing down Astor house (LOC)

  John Jacob Astor had it built, in 1836. Abraham Lincoln slept there, in 1860. The south part was demolished in 1913, a victim of subway construction, and the rest was torn down in 1926. Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astor_House
