I'm suspicious that this photo was 'faked' for the press by the developers of the Empire State Building, in the same way that this one was: www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions/view?exhibitionId=%7B36D817... (from the Met Museum in New York). The two other airships in the sky makes me suspicious, as well as the near-perfect composition. Whilst there were apparently a few 'trial' dockings of airships with the Empire State Building whilst it was under construction, I doubt that there were such high quality photographs taken of those moments!

Frankie Roberto The Zeppelin is far beyond the tower. The photographer was fortunate that from his vantage point it came into position to suggest it might be moored there. I would guess that if the ship was at the same distance from the camera as the building it would be a good deal larger.

Luftschiff LZ 126, better known as the US Navy airship USS Los Angeles (ZR-3). The dirigible was built by Luftschiffbau Zeppelin, in Friedrichshafen, Germany, as part of war reparations to the United States after the Great War. The date on the glass plate of "9/22/24," and lack of markings would place the airship in Germany, prior to her non-stop delivery flight from Friedrichshafen to Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey, October 12-15, 1924.
