The pilot in this photo is Bill Terry, taken at Edwards AFB in 1954. I attended high school with his son. Bill flew the P38 in WWII and took some amazing pictures during his tour. He could play the piano by ear. Bill became an inventor after his career in the military. Sadly, he passed away in 2017.

While it could be said that of this pair of images this one with the plane heading away from the tree 'should' be the better image it is the other one which has the most appeal to me. Your mileage may vary if you aren't a left-handed autistic Gemini born in a pink-painted hospital in southern California in the 1960s, but for me, the above is true.

Convair YF-102 Delta Dagger 52-7994 (1st prototype Model 8-80) landing @ Edwards AFB ca. late '53. This a/c was written off on 2 Nov 53 after a Bendix fuel control system failure caused the engine to shut down in flight. The test pilot (Richard L. Johnson) survived but was seriously injured while trying to dead-stick the a/c.
