William Morris Hughes, Australia's 7th Prime Minister, was also the longest serving until 1957 when Robert Menzies overtook Hughes’ record term in office. Hughes’ other record still stands: no parliamentarian has surpassed his 51 years and 7 months of continuous service as a member of Australia’s House of Representatives – from the 1st parliament in 1901 to the 20th in 1952. Before Federation, Hughes had been a Labor member of the New South Wales parliament from 1894 to 1901. In March 1901, he won the seat of West Sydney in the first House of Representatives. He served in the Labor Cabinets of Chris Watson and Andrew Fisher. He then replaced Andrew Fisher as Prime Minister in 1915 and led Australia during World War I. Hughes’ campaign for conscription during the 1914-18 war split the Labor Party and affected political alignment in Australia for the next 50 years. After the war, Hughes was instrumental in the international recognition of Australia as an independent nation through its membership of the League of Nations. William "Bill" Glasgow was one of the most renowned Australian soldiers of the First World War, a politician, and later a diplomat. He was born on 6 June 1876 near Maryborough in Queensland. After finishing school, Glasgow found clerical work and joined the Queensland Mounted Infantry with whom he fought as a lieutenant in the Boer War, winning the Distinguished Service Order. He was promoted to major general on 30 June 1918 and given command of the 1st Division, which he led through the final months of the war. A stern disciplinarian, Glasgow lobbied for the death penalty for a group of Australian deserters, but he was also said to have worked hard to ensure the welfare of his men, a labour that continued during the postwar years. Glasgow was demobilised in August 1919 having been awarded several French decorations, the Belgian Croix de Guerre, and the Order of the Bath - Knight Commander (Military) but continued to serve as a reserve officer. At the 1919 election, Glasgow won a senate seat, becoming Minister for Home and Territories and later Minister for Defence. He was Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Senate during the Scullin Government but lost his seat in 1931. After his political career ended, Glasgow directed several companies, sat on the Queensland Board of Advice of the National Bank of Australasia, and was President of the Queensland Branch of the United Australia Party. In 1939 he became Australia's first High Commissioner to Canada, working on the Empire Air Training Scheme and regularly visiting Australian airmen during their training. Glasgow's tenure was marked by a close and productive relationship with Canada's prime minister; he was a strong advocate for closer liaison on Pacific strategy and attended the 1944 conferences between Churchill and Roosevelt, receiving briefings and representing Australia's interests. Sir Edward Henry Macartney (24 January 1863 – 24 February 1956) was a solicitor, company director and a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. From 1915 until his retirement from parliament, Macartney was at loggerheads with the ALP Government, which condemned him as a representative of monopolies and the money power. Premier T. J. Ryan and Macartney bitterly disliked one another. Macartney accused Ryan of having personally profited from legal cases while he was attorney-general. Such was the ALP's overt disdain for Macartney that in 1916, the Government introduced a constitutional bill designed to disqualify solicitors who acted 'for monopoly companies or alien companies' from being members of parliament which became popularly known as the 'Thynne and Macartney disabling bill. Michael (Mick) Stafford. Mick was a Professional at the Golf Club from 1921 to 1970. He commenced on the 24 March on 30 shillings a week and a guarantee of 12 months of service.
