An account of wounded soldiers in the streets of Paris, published in The New Age, September 24, 1914, by Beatrice Hastings, writing as Alice Morning: "as I stood reading under a lamp, I heard sounds, and the crowd ran, and there came slowly across the boulevard a band of wounded soldiers, French, Belgians, and Senegalese,quite a hundred. And the poor things were all smiling, one or two of the blacks beaming. Some of them shook hands with us, and we all fished out cigarettes and what-ever we had. They seemed mostly hit in the left arm,but a few were bandaged round the head also. I cannot well describe the mingled feelings of the crowd, joy to see them and sorrow to see them like that, expressed in low murmurs.
