  Just a wild stab here, but this is almost certainly a battleship, maybe something like the West Virginia. Definitely toward the later end of the date range. In fact, a little research shows that the USS Maryland made a goodwill voyage out your way in 1925.

While the epic 1908 tour saw 23 US Navy vessels enter the ports of Sydney, Melbourne and Albany, the 1925 tour saw a record breaking total of 56 - the largest single foreign naval fleet ever received in Australia!
