www.nysonglines.com/new.htm says the the Exchange Buffet opened in 1885 and claims it was the world's first self-service restaurant. -

LOC also has this and 8 other Bain photos in an online set called "Stock trading on the New York Curb Association market, 1907-1920" www.loc.gov/pictures/item/2005678948/ It must have been something to see this live..especially in the snow or rain. More on the Exchange Buffet restaurant, part of a chain, where you simply told the cashier how much you owe and there were no checks.
