Light Cruiser of the Royal Australian Navy, probably HMAS ADELAIDE

    This ship is the Improved Town Class light cruiser HMAS Adelaide, the last of this Class of ship to be built, and the only one to have that heavily enclosed bridge structure. A cruiser of 5,560 tons she was built at Cockatoo Island Dockyard, Sydney, laid down in January 1915, launched July 27, 1989 completed July 31, 1922 and commissioned into the RAN on August 5. Seven years in building and known as 'Long Delayed.' She went through various modernisations during which the fore funnel was removed in 1938-39. She was laid up in reserve between 1928 and 1938, and I think this photo is taken by Sam Hood between 1922 and 1928. She served through WWII and was broken up at Port Kembla NSW in 1949.

However, USS Buchanan, as the HMS Campbeltown, would go on to be sacrificed as a ship bomb (for lack of a better term) in one of the most daring and important raids of World War II, the Saint-Nazaire Raid of March 1942.
