  AUSTRALIA’S original goats arrived with the First Fleet in 1788, the 19 voyagers were part of a floating menagerie that included 18 turkeys, 87 chickens, five rabbits, four cows and Captain Arthur Phillip’s greyhounds. These pioneers spread across Australia with white settlement and via expeditions by explorers such as those of Ludwig Leichhardt, who took 290 goats on his 1846 trek from Port Stephens in NSW to Peak Range in Central Queensland, and wrote in his journal of enjoying “a jolly Christmas with a young roasted goat and tapioca pudding”. As well as providing milk, meat and transport to early settlers, goats were also pets and providers of entertainment. By the turn of the century goat racing had become a regular event at school sports in country areas and at celebrations such as the St Patrick’s Day parades in Brisbane in the 1900s, according to Errol Beutel and Faye Schutt, whose 2002 book The Indispensable Goat is a definitive guide to Queensland’s goat history.
