The bridge displayed here is the railroad bridge, which burned in 1974 but is still standing. It is no longer in use as a railroad bridge. Plans have been made to reopen it as a walking bridge. Normally, when people say the Poughkeepsie Bridge they are thinking of the automobile bridge a bit to the south of the railroad bridge. It was built in the 1930s after this picture was taken.

I road the 20th Century Limited on its last voyage ever. It was from New York City to Chicago on January 2, 1967 on that very railroad bed pictured along the senic Hudson River. I was reporting for active duty in the Navy. The dining car was everything elegant you see the in the movies. I felt so out of place, a kid in a sailor suit, among very elegantly dressed people.
