The girl on the right - it's about time she got her (or rather A.H. Poole's) racket restrung. Some of those strings are very loose.

National Library of Ireland on The Commons The 1911 Census shows James aged 35, Katie, 34 (Born in Kildare 1877ish) Mai 4, Joseph 3 and Kathleen 1 as the family in the house. In addition Mary Osrant 20 and Bridie Osrant 13 are listed as household servants. Morley Terrace was in the Gracedieu area of Waterford whose residents had notions about themselves. (Or so I told my in laws for many years!)

National Library of Ireland on The Commons I just realised that I did not comment on the shot itself. It really is a lovely portrait and such pretty ladies - mother and daughters. The chances are that Kathleen with the racquet was wearing Mai's hand-me-downs which might explain the ragged hem to the dress. Both the younger girls socks are hanging loose which in those days probably meant no garters as elasticated tops were not the norm. I wore elastic garters for my school socks way back when and they were great for firing papaer bullets at the teachers and other pupils. (and yes both boys and girls wore garters in those days!)

John Spooner There's definitely a thesis to be done on Poole Photographic Studio props from the 1880s to the 1940s... Suspect that the strings were loose from off scene bashing of the heads of hundreds of sisters and brothers over the years, before the perfect poses were adopted!
