    That is perhaps an "osage orange" (iirc) . When I was growing-up in Woodley Park (N.W. DC) and attending Maret School, there were a bunch of them around and we'd often roll them out into the street to be squished by passing cars.

    Horse apples is another word for the osage orange - the color in the name is because it's heartwood produces an orange dye.

    I've heard them refered to as a "Hedge Apple", perhaps as the Osage Orange is also called the "hedge" around here. Perhaps the lack of horses nearby ... nope, plenty of horses...buggies..Amish. Mid Missouri they are osage oranges or hedge apples.
